Error 401 means your player sent login details that the server did not accept. In most cases the login is typed wrong, expired, or tied to an old link. Check your details first, then work down the list below.
The fixes are ordered from the quickest to the hardest. Most people solve it in the first three steps.
| Likely cause | Time to fix | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Typo in username, password or link | 2 minutes | Very easy |
| Subscription ended or not yet active | 3 minutes | Easy |
| Old playlist or portal link saved in the app | 5 minutes | Easy |
| Hidden spaces or bad characters | 3 minutes | Easy |
| Wrong device time or date | 3 minutes | Easy |
| Too many devices on one login | 5 minutes | Medium |
| Old app cache or stuck session | 5 minutes | Medium |
| DNS or network filter in the way | 10 minutes | Medium |
| Outdated app version | 10 minutes | Medium |
What does error 401 actually mean?
401 is an HTTP status code. HTTP is the language that apps and servers use to talk over the internet. The code 401 is called "Unauthorized". The server is saying, "I do not know who you are, or your proof of identity is not valid."
This is different from a buffering problem. With 401, the stream never starts. Your app asks for the channel list or the video, and the server refuses right at the door.
If you want to read how status codes work in plain technical terms, the MDN Web Media guides explain how browsers and apps request and play media from a server.
The three things a server checks
- Your username and password (or a single access link that holds them).
- Your subscription status, which must be active.
- Your connection, which must look like a normal, allowed request.
If any one of these fails, you see 401. So the fix is always one of three jobs: correct the login, renew the plan, or clean up the connection.
Quick checks before you start
Spend one minute on these. They remove a lot of false alarms.
- Open any website on the same device. If the web works, your internet is fine.
- Find your original activation message. Keep it open. You will copy details from it.
- Close the IPTV app fully, not just minimize it.
- Restart the device if you have not done so this week.
Now go through the causes in order. Stop as soon as the error disappears.
Fix error 401: cause by cause
Cause 1: Typo in username, password or link → Fix: re-enter it by hand
This is the number one reason. One wrong letter is enough. Capital letters matter. The letter "l" and the number "1" look alike. The letter "O" and zero look alike too.
- Open your activation message from SubTV IP.
- Delete the saved login in your player.
- Type the username and password slowly. Do not rely on autofill.
- Turn on the "show password" option if the app has one, so you can see what you typed.
- Save and reload the channel list.
If typing on a TV remote is painful, use the copy and paste method from a phone. Send the details to yourself in a notes app, then use the app's QR or web-upload feature if your player offers it.
Cause 2: Hidden spaces or bad characters → Fix: clean the pasted text
When you copy a link from a message or email, an invisible space can come along. The server reads that space as part of your password. Result: 401.
- Paste the text into a plain notes app first.
- Press the backspace key at the end to remove any trailing space.
- Check the start of the line for a space too.
- Copy it again from the notes app and paste it into the player.
Also watch for "smart quotes" or line breaks. A link must be one single line with no breaks.
Cause 3: Subscription ended or not active yet → Fix: check your plan status
SubTV IP plans run for 1, 3 or 12 months. When the time ends, the login stops working and the server answers 401. This often happens on the exact day the plan ends, so it feels sudden.
- Look at the date of your last order. Add 1, 3 or 12 months.
- If that date has passed, renew your plan.
- If you just ordered, remember that activation is instant after the order. Wait a minute, then restart the app.
- If the order went through but the login still fails, send your order details to WhatsApp support.
Payment options include PayPal and credit card. After payment, use only the newest details you received. Old details from a past order may no longer work.
Cause 4: Old playlist or portal link saved in the app → Fix: replace it with the current one
Apps remember the link you first added. If your plan was renewed, or your details were reissued, the old saved link can be dead. The app keeps trying it and keeps getting 401.
- Open your player's playlist or account list.
- Remove the old entry completely.
- Add a new entry with the current details.
- Wait for the list to load. The first load can take a minute.
Do not just edit one letter in the old entry if you are unsure. A clean new entry is safer than a patched old one.
Cause 5: Wrong date and time on the device → Fix: set time to automatic
Secure connections check the clock on your device. If the date or time is far off, the secure check can fail and the login may be rejected. This is common after a power cut on a TV or box that has no battery clock.
- Open the settings on your device.
- Find the date and time section.
- Turn on automatic date and time (network time).
- Pick the right time zone.
- Restart the player app.
Menu names differ between a Fire TV Stick 4K Max, a Samsung Smart TV (Tizen), an LG webOS TV, an Android TV Box, a Xiaomi Mi Box S and an Apple TV. Look for the word "Date" or "Time" in the main settings if you cannot find the exact path.
Cause 6: Too many devices on one login → Fix: use fewer screens at once
A login is made for a set number of connections. If your phone, TV and a friend's box all use the same login together, the server may block the extra one. The blocked one sees an authorization error.
- Turn off the app on other devices.
- Wait two to three minutes so the old session can close.
- Start the app on the one device you want.
If you often need more than one screen, ask support on WhatsApp what setup fits your plan. Do not guess, and do not share your login with people you do not know.
Cause 7: Old app data or a stuck session → Fix: clear the app cache
The app stores temporary data to load faster. Sometimes that data holds an old session. The app keeps showing 401 even after you fix your login.
- Go to your device settings and open the apps list.
- Choose your IPTV player.
- Select "Clear cache". Do not choose "Clear data" yet, because that also removes your saved playlists.
- Open the app again and try to load the list.
If it still fails, you can clear the data too. Then add your login again from scratch. Have your details ready before you do this.
On Samsung Smart TV (Tizen), LG webOS and Apple TV, you may not have a clear cache button. In that case, remove the app and install it again.
Cause 8: DNS or network filter in the way → Fix: switch to Cloudflare DNS
DNS is like a phone book for the internet. It turns a web name into a number. Some internet providers have slow or filtered DNS, and that can break the request. A broken request can look like an authorization problem.
Switching to Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) often helps with both blocked requests and slow starts.
- Open your device or router network settings.
- Find the DNS option and change it from automatic to manual.
- Enter 1.1.1.1 as the main DNS.
- Save, then restart the device and the router.
- Open your player and reload the list.
Changing DNS on the router covers every device in your home at once. Changing it on one device only affects that device.
Cause 9: A VPN or proxy changes your connection → Fix: turn it off and check
A VPN hides your real location. Some servers do not like a connection that jumps between places. If your login is tied to one setup, a sudden change can cause a 401.
- Turn off any VPN or proxy on the device.
- Turn it off on the router too, if you set one up there.
- Try the app again.
If it works without the VPN, keep it off for this app.
Cause 10: Outdated app version → Fix: update the player
Old versions of a player can use old ways to log in. A newer server may refuse them. Updating fixes that and also removes known bugs.
- Open the app store on your device.
- Search for your player: TiviMate 5.x, IBO Player Pro, IPTV Smarters Pro, Kodi 21 or Flex IPTV.
- Press update if one is shown.
- Open the app and load your list again.
If you use a different player and keep seeing 401 on every login, try one of the players listed above. They are the players that SubTV IP supports.
Match your player to the right login style
Players ask for details in different ways. Using the wrong style is a hidden cause of 401. Here is a simple guide.
| Player | What to check |
|---|---|
| TiviMate 5.x | Remove the old playlist, then add a fresh one with the current details. |
| IBO Player Pro | Confirm the playlist entry matches your newest activation message. |
| IPTV Smarters Pro | Re-enter username, password and server link by hand. Watch for extra spaces. |
| Kodi 21 | Re-enter the details in the add-on settings and restart Kodi. |
| Flex IPTV | Delete the saved list, add it again and wait for the first load. |
Do not mix details from two different orders. Pick the newest message and use only that one.
A clean reset: the safest full restart
If single fixes did not work, do one full reset. It takes about ten minutes and clears many hidden problems at once.
- Close the app and unplug your TV box or stick for 30 seconds.
- Unplug your router for 30 seconds as well.
- Plug the router in first. Wait until the lights are steady.
- Plug in your device and wait for it to start fully.
- Check the date and time are right.
- Open the app, remove the old playlist and add it again with fresh details.
This order matters. The router must be ready before the device asks for the internet.
How to stop 401 from coming back
Good habits save you from repeat problems.
- Save your activation message in a safe place so you always have the right details.
- Note your renewal date in your phone calendar, a few days before the plan ends.
- Keep the app updated on every device.
- Use one device per login at the same time unless your plan allows more.
- Keep your DNS stable. Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1) is a good, simple choice.
- Set the buffer to 5,000 ms if your player has that option. This does not cause 401, but it keeps playback smooth after you fix the login.
Strong login habits also protect you from other issues. Never post your login in a public chat or share it with strangers. If someone else uses it, your connection limit fills up and you get blocked.
Why a good setup matters in 2026
Viewing habits keep moving toward streaming on many devices. Firms such as Nielsen publish research on how people watch video, and you can read general viewing trends in Nielsen Insights. More devices at home means more logins, more apps and more chances for a small mistake. That is why a clean, simple setup is worth the effort.
SubTV IP is a premium paid subscription with instant activation after your order, 4K and 60 fps HEVC streams, and a 99.9% uptime goal. With a correct login and a healthy connection, 401 should not appear. If you need a new plan or a renewal, you can pick one here:
What to do if nothing worked
If you tried every step and 401 still shows, the problem is probably on the account side, not on your device. Do this:
- Write down your order date and the plan length you bought.
- Take a photo of the error message on your screen.
- Note which player and device you use, for example TiviMate 5.x on a Fire TV Stick 4K Max.
- Tell us which fixes you already tried.
- Send all of this to WhatsApp support.
With this information, support can check your account faster. They can see if the plan is active, if the details changed, or if the login needs a reset.
While you wait, try the same login on a second device. If it works there, the first device has the problem. If it fails on both, the problem is the login or the plan.
Quick checklist
- Details typed by hand, with no spaces.
- Plan still active.
- Old playlist deleted and a new one added.
- Date and time set to automatic.
- Only one device in use.
- Cache cleared and app updated.
- DNS set to 1.1.1.1.
- VPN off.
